Wayne Farms is one of the largest poultry producers in the United States. To maximize their Decatur, Alabama site, the firm chose to build a new distribution facility to connect their East and West processing facilities. Primus Builders was selected to provide for design and construction services.
The 135,000 SF project features 108,900 SF of dedicated -10° freezer storage, shrink-compensating slabs, and a 13-door dock maintained at 35°.
One of Primus’ main challenges was overcoming a 17-foot elevation change between the East plant and the new facility. Two hundred and fifty feet of pallet conveyance links the East plant with the distribution center and moves 35-40 pallets an hour.
Sustainable features include a high-efficiency, PC-based refrigeration control system, a glycol under-floor warming system and T5 energy-efficient fluorescent lighting.
