Tyson’s Union City, Tennessee plant provides chicken products to food outlets nationwide. Primus was selected to provide construction management services for a 130,000 SF renovation and expansion project to this fully-operational existing facility. The project was completed over three phases that took place simultaneously. These included:
• Phase 1: Deboning and office addition, loading dock and employee wellness areas
• Phase 2: 62,000 SF further processing area with a 32° cooler and a 0° spiral freezer
• Phase 3: -45° automated freezer featuring a VRM (Variable Retention Multi-pass) system
Primus’s ingenuity played a crucial role in this project’s success. To facilitate installation of the automation equipment, the team erected three walls in the VRM area and left one unfinished. Once the equipment was installed, the fourth wall was erected and the thermal envelope put in place to complete the building.
To combat the region’s geographic floodplain, Primus laid rock to stabilize the soil. Wind advisory protocol was utilized regularly to maintain job safety during extreme weather. Even with these challenges, the project team earned the Primus safety recognition of 200 Safe Days. Primus Safety Director Theresa Ciatto hosted a celebration to acknowledge the team’s commitment. This site was also recognized for collecting the most donations for Primus’s year-long charitable initiative with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
